Educational institutions providing education in theology and religious history, primarily, but not exclusively, to prepare students for jobs as priests, ministers, or church workers; usually sponsored or controlled by a church or other religious organization. For buildings that house schools devoted especially to the training of rabbis, use "rabbinical seminaries."

La forma del budismo practicado en los países sudasiaticos de Sri Lanka, Burma, Camboya. Tailandia y Laos. Su doctrina, relativamente inalterada desde el siglo III a.C., se basa en la "tipitaka" o canon Pali y consiste en una interpretación conservadora de las enseñanzas de Buda. La mayor distinción de Theravada del posterior mahayana es el rechazo a los bodhisattvas. Mientras que el objetivo final del Theravada es convertirse en un "santo perfecto" o "arhat", los creyentes laicos no pueden alcanzar la iluminación verdadera. La verdadera iluminación es solo capturada por los religiosos y cuando estas son imposibles de comprender se recurre al Buddha.
