Se refiere en general a pinturas sobre un soporte de madera, incluye pinturas portátiles pequeñas y de tamaño medio como los cuadros de altar, para los cuales se unen varias placas de madera para formar un panel de tamaño mayor. El término se usa típicamente para referise especialmente a pinturas sobre soporte de madera
en el arte occidental, generalmente datado entre la Antigua Grecia y Roma hasta el Renacimiento y posteriormente el lienzo pasó a ser el soporte estándar para pinturas de este tamaño. Aún hoy son comunes los paneles pintados para iconos griegos y rusos ortodoxos.

Úsese generalmente para pinturas chinas o japonesas en rollos colgantes (kakemono, si es japonés) o en rollos (emaki-mono, si es japonés). Para documentos escritos en largas franjas enrroladas, use "rollo (artefacto de información)".
