En el contexto de la antigua arquitectura romana, este término se refiere generalmente a pasillos que permitían el cierre en ambos extremos. Originalmente, estas estructuras funcionaban como puentes o cruces del pomerio. El término se aplicó más tarde a puertas de enlace y con el tiempo a puertas de postes y dinteles que fueron sustituídas por arcos. Más tarde iaunas fueron a menudo también bóvedas. Hubo varias iaunas notables en Roma, sobre todo el Geminus Jano, el santuario más importante de Jano en la ciudad. Las puertas cerradas del Geminus Jano señalaba que Roma estaba en guerra y cuando se abrían las puertas significaba que estaba en paz. No se sabe si todos los iaunas eran consideradas sagradas en algún sentido, pero el término sin duda tiene alguna connotación religiosa.
