Hylobatidae (family)
Definición
Family containing four genera and 14 species of arboreal apes, plus one fossil species of a different genus dating from the Pleistocene. Their major distinction from other apes are their long arms which they use to brachiate through the trees. The great ape family was previously referred to as Pongidae, and humans (and fossil hominids) were omitted from it, but on grounds of relatedness chimpanzees, gorillas, humans and orangutans are now classified with humans, because they are all more closely related to one another than any of them are to the gibbons, who are now classified in this separate family.

Hymenaea (genus)
Definición
Genus containing 14 living species and several extinct species of trees, most native to tropical America, but at least one native to the east coast of Africa. The trees are used for edible fruits, leaves to make tea, a dense wood used in making ships and furniture, thick bark to make canoes, seeds containing large amounts of a highly viscous polysaccharide used for food, paper, cosmetic and pharmaceutical, and hard resins used for varnish. Resin is gathered from living trees and as found in the ground, deposited by lost specimens of living species or extinct species.

Hymenaea courbaril (species)
Definición
Species found in Southern Mexico, throughout Central America and the West Indies to northern Brazil, Bolivia, and Peru. The tree's best development is on ridges or slopes and high riverbanks. The wood is used for furniture and tools. The tree exudes a resinous gum used in varnishes and scents.

Hymenaea protera (extinct species)
Definición
Thought to be the ancestor of living Hymenaea species. Copal deposited from these extinct trees is highly valued for varnish. It had an extensive range, from southern Mexico and northern South America to the African continent. Studies of morphology and DNA indicate that H. protera was more closely related to the only species of Hymenaea remaining in East Africa than it is to the numerous American species.
Jerarquía
Hymenaea verrucosa (species)
Definición
Species of tree native to the east coast of Africa. Produces a resinous copal. Some authors place this African species in a separate monotypic genus, Trachylobium.

Hymenoptera (order)
Definición
Members of an order of insects containing sawflies, wasps, bees, and ants.
Jerarquía
hyperboloid
Definición
Shape comprising the open surface generated by revolving a hyperbola about either of its axes. If the tranverse axis of the surface lies along the x axis and its centre lies at the origin and if a, b, and c are the principal semi-axes, then the general equation of the surface is expressed as x2/a2 ± y2/b2 − z2/c2 = 1.

Hyperotreti (order)
Definición
Order of eel-shaped, scaleless, soft-skinned aquatic primitive vertebrates with paired thick barbels on the end of the snout, a tail fin (but no paired fins), no jaws, cartilaginous skeletons, mouths comprising round or slit-like sucking openings with horny teeth, poorly developed eyes buried under the skin, a single nostril at the end of the snout, and five to 15 pairs of gills used for respiration. They are found in cold seawater, habitually lie buried except for the tip of the head on soft bottoms and in burrows.
Jerarquía
hyperspectral imaging
Definición
Creation of images by hyperspectral remote sensors which collect data simultaneously in dozens or hundreds of narrow, adjacent spectral bands. The images thus created are more detailed than those of other multispectral sensors with just a few relatively broad wavelength bands.

hypoxia (environmental condition)
Definición
The condition of low oxygen; it is typically defined as a level below 20.9% in an atmospheric environment and in the range between 1%-30% saturation in an aquatic environment. Hypoxic conditions are detrimental to living organisms. In a conservation context, hypoxia may be deliberately induced as a means of preservation of materials or pest control. For the extreme condition in which oxygen is below 0.1% or absent, use "anoxia." For a medical condition characterized by low blood oxygen, use "anoxemia," for which "hypoxemia" is a used for term.

hypsographic features

Hyracoidea (order)
Definición
Members of the order containing six species in one family. Living members are primitive hoofed herbivorous mammals of the family Procaviidae, the only surviving members of the order Hyracoidea, being small thickset, herbivorous quadrupeds, about the size of a large domestic rabbit, similar to guinea pigs in appearance, with tusk-like incisor teeth, and native Africa and the Middle East.

Hyracotherium (extinct genus)
Definición
Genus of small dog-sized animals representing the oldest known horse; they lived in the Eocene Epoch. Characterized by a relatively short face, eye sockets nearer the middle than modern horses, and a short space between the front teeth and the cheek teeth (diastema).
