Codices were typically made using carbon and other pigments applied to gessoed amate paper, deer skin, woven cotton, or other materials. After the Spanish Conquest, the tlahcuilohqueh continued producing codices, but created a mixed system that combined glyphic writing, pictography, and the Latin alphabet.

The term has also been extended to other accompanying insignia, arms carried by the warrior, and the headdress associated with the garment. The headdress often reflected the theme of the garment, which could represent animals, demons, gods, or nature elements such as starry skies or flames.
