A method of chemical analysis in which a small sample of material is inserted into a pyrolysis unit before subsequently analyzed using the techniques of gas- chromatography and mass spectrometry in tandem. This method enables a reproducible characterisation of the macromolecular complexes found in virtually all materials in the natural environment.
