Enterprises or organizations, usually commercial, in which two or more parties jointly undertake the enterprise, but otherwise retain their distinct identities. It differs from "partnerships (companies)" in that a partnership generally involves an ongoing, long-term business relationship, whereas a joint venture is based on a single business transaction or project.
