The middle era of the Phanerozoic eon externding from about 251 to 65 million years ago. It follows the Paleozoic and precedes the Cenozoic. It is divided into the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods. The Mesozoic is popularly known as the age of the dinosaurs.
