Class of fungi having members that produce saclike structures (asci) containing ascospores in either a closed fruiting body (ascocarp) or spore balls. Best known examples of genera include Capronia (order Chaetothyriales), which includes some marine fungi, Pyrenula (order Pyrenulales), which includes wart lichens, and Eurotium (order Eurotiales), which includes species of Aspergillus for which a sexual phase of reproduction has been identified.
