Species of giant sedge native to freshwater marshes all over North America. It has thick, rounded green stems growing to 3 m (10 feet) in height, with long, grasslike leaves. The plants play an important ecological role at shorelines, buffering against wind and water forces, thereby allowing the establishment of other types of plants and reducing erosion.
