General term referring to various trees and shrubs that form dense thickets in muddy coastal swamps and tidal estuaries in tropical and subtropical regions, marked by their ability to tolerate salt water and by their possession of different forms of aerial roots. The term is applied chiefly to species of the genera Rhizophora and Bruguiera (family Rhizophoraceae), Avicennia (family Avicenniaceae), Laguncularia (family Combretaceae), and Sonneratia (family Lythraceae).
