Species of thick-skinned, herbivorous, even-toed hoofed mammals, significantly smaller than the common hippopotamus, native to the forests and swamps of western Africa; thought to be the only surviving species of their genus, as the Malagasy pigmy hippopotamus is presumed extinct.
