Term used in a general sense to refer to any animal or plant that eats animals, as opposed to a plant-eating herbivore or an omnivore, that has a diet of both plant and animal material. For members of the mammalian order Carnivora, use "Carnivora" or the alternate descriptor "carnivores (order)."
