Cowrie shells (Cypraeidae) and egg shells (Ovulidae) that have highly polished and brilliantly colored shells and a mantle, which may cover the shell; if touched, members of group suddenly withdraw, the change in colour serving to confuse predators; common in shallow tropical oceans, some species in cooler waters.
