General term referring to members of the Testudines order that are land dwelling rather than aquatic, being four-footed reptiles in which the trunk is enclosed between a carapace and plastron, formed by the dorsal vertebrae, ribs, and sternum; the skin being covered with large horny plates, commonly called the shell.
