General term for members of eleven genera of medium-sized, ground-nesting, seed-eating birds of the pheasant family, intermediate between the larger birds called "pheasants" and the smaller quails. They are native to Europe, Asia, North Africa, and the Middle East, and were introduced to North America in the nineteeth century as game birds.
