Species of low spiny shrub; the fruit and bark are used to extract dye and for medicinal purposes. On an aluminum mordant, the berries produce a yellow-green colorant. See also the narrower term "Rhamnus saxatilis ssp infectorius." In some classifications, R.infectorius is considered a synonym of R.saxatilis rather than a subspecies.
