Sacred stones or pillars generally dedicated to the cult of a particular god as personification or symbol. These may be single pillars or appear in groups, and may be of meteoric stone. As pillars they were sometimes placed before a shrine. These are considered the first stages of what would evolve into altars and iconic statuary.
