Benches designed to allow the detainment of prisoners or others. The benches may be enclosed or open, and may be designed to allow the attachment of restraints. The purpose of the benches varied in periods of history and various contexts: purposes include as a temporary means of detainment prior to imprisonment or trial, to shame the citizen in a public place, or to allow the detainees to attend a religious service or other event.
