The fruit of Piper nigrum, the pepper plant, dried and typically ground into powder to use as a condiment. It has a hot, pungent flavor and is most frequently paired with some form of salt. The ground spice appears in two forms, the more pungent black pepper, produced from black peppercorns, and the milder white pepper, produced from white peppercorns.
