Combined residential and commercial structures built with a shop that opens on to the ground floor pavement with a second or third storey generally used as a residence for the proprietor. These are most commonly found in Singapore, Malaysia, and China, but the form exists elsewhere, often in "Chinatown" developments in American cities, referring back to the original source.
