basilicas

In the Catholic church, a term used by canon lawyers and liturgists as a title. It was assigned to certain churches as an honorific, the character of which was not always very clearly defined. Basilicas in this sense are divided into two classes, the greater or patriarchal, and the lesser, basilicas. For built works having a basilican floor plan, use "basilicas (works by form)."
