The religion of certain groups that separated from the Roman Catholic Church over papal authority and certain doctrines. The formation of the Old Catholic communion of Germans, Austrians, and Swiss began in 1870 at a public meeting held in Nuremberg. They accept certain Roman Catholic doctrine, but reject other doctrines and practices; they are not in communion with the pope in Rome.
