Genre of ancient and medieval texts comprising short mnemonic rules, sayings, principles, or observations, often expanded upon by means of a commentary. Known in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism; in Buddhism, sutras are typically discourses or sermons believed to have been delivered or authorized by the Buddha.
