Japanese culture and period lasting from December 1830 through December 1844; also known as Tempō. It was initiated to signal a break with the Bunsei era after disasters of earthquake and fire. The name means: "Heavenly Imperial Protection". It was a culturally rich period marked by ambitious, if ultimately failed, campaigns of reform.
