Countries that are economically, politically, or militarily dependent on a more powerful country or empire. The term is one of several terms with overlapping meanings used to describe the subordination of one state to a more powerful state in international affairs. Examples of client states are Cappadocia as affiliated with the Roman Republic and Poland as affiliated with the Soviet Union.
