Family containing around 10 genera and 17 species, however the circumscription of the family has varied widely. They have a wide, but scattered distribution throughout the tropics and temperate zones of the world. Predominantly African family of flowering plants, many members of which are popular garden ornamentals, especially in warm, dry regions of the world.
