Visual effect in motion pictures in which one scene fades in to another. Both shots are seen briefly superimposed. The dissolve was first used to imply geographic or temporal transitions. Later, the optical nature of the dissolve was used for more tonal effects, such a character's state of mind, fantasy, or flashback sequences.
