Species of tree found in the eastern half of North America from Canada to Alabama to the Mississippi River. Butternut timber is used for carving and furniture. The bark, root, leaf, and seed hulls are used for dyeing; with aluminum mordants, butternut hulls produce of colorfast brown on wool and a grayish-green on cotton.
