Ancient Roman inns that served cooked delicacies and full meals, usually having a narrow, long floor plan and vaulted ceilings, with serving boys attending and the proprieter sitting on a raised platform at one end. They were better-class establishments, distinguished from the lower-class inns, "cauponae."
