Members of a species of ornamental aquarium and pond fish of the Cyprinidae (carp) family native to East Asia but introduced into many other areas. It was one of the earliest fish to be domesticated from a dark-gray or brown carp native to East Asia. It was first domesticated in China, then introduced to Europe in the late 17th century.
