Tools intended for cutting, digging, or removing earth or turf, in the form of a wooden haft attached to an oblong metal blade. The haft usually has a cross-bar or handle at the end for grasping while forcing the metal blade into the ground with the foot. The blade itself is often formed to accommodate foot pressure. For similar tools with longer handles or hafts and broader blades intended for moving matter, use "shovels."
